Research activities

Alice's research lies in the field of human rights implementation and the relationship between human rights and democracy, with a focus on the role of parliaments and the European Convention on Human Rights. She also writes regularly on the Human Rights Act 1998 and the UK's relationship with the ECHR system.

In 2024, Alice is co-coordinator of the Multi-Country Study as part of the Council of Europe鈥檚听Project on听Support for efficient domestic capacity for the execution of European听Court of Human Rights Judgments.听

Biography

Dr Alice Donald is Professor of Human Rights Law in the Department of Law and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on human rights implementation and the relationship between human rights and democratic governance, with a focus on the role of Parliaments. Alice听previously worked as a commissioner, editor, broadcast journalist and journalism trainer at the BBC World Service (1991-2005).
